National Curriculum: Primary – Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
Pupils should know the facts about legal and illegal harmful substances and associated risks, including smoking, alcohol use and drug-taking.
Pupils should also know about Families and people who care for me, caring friendships, respectful relationships, online relationships, being safe and internet safety and harms.
One hour sessions encourage pupils to think about what drugs are, exploring what they know, giving information that will help them understand the dangers of drugs and challenge their attitudes. We also investigate wider issues around peer pressure and relationships.
Year 3 General Drugs Medicines
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Know what medicines are and when to use them.
- Have considered how medicines affects the body.
- Have considered ways of keeping healthy.
- Know all medicines are drugs but not all drugs are medicines.
Year 4 General Drugs
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Know what a drug is
- Have considered how drugs affect the body.
- Know the importance of using medicines correctly.
- Know all medicines are drugs but not all drugs are medicines.
Year 3 and 4 Smoking
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Have learnt the importance of being healthy.
- Have considered different ways of keeping healthy.
- Have learnt how smoking affects different parts of the body.
- Have learnt the harmful effects of smoking.
- Have learnt how smoking can affect people and pets around them.
Year 3 and 4 Alcohol
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Have learnt the importance of being healthy.
- Have considered different ways of keeping healthy.
- Have learnt how alcohol affects different parts of the body.
- Have learnt the harmful effects of alcohol.
Year 3 and 4 Choices
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Think about the decisions they make and how it affects them and others.
- Have considered ways of resisting peer pressure.
- Have heard they are unique and need to look after themselves.
- Have learnt how making choices can affect their future.
