National Curriculum: Primary – Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
Pupils should know the facts about legal and illegal harmful substances and associated risks, including smoking, alcohol use and drug-taking.
Pupils should also know about Families and people who care for me, caring friendships, respectful relationships, online relationships, being safe and internet safety and harms.
One hour sessions encourage pupils to think about what drugs are, exploring what they know, giving information that will help them understand the dangers of drugs and challenge their attitudes. We also investigate wider issues around peer pressure and relationships.
Year 5 and 6 Legal and Illegal Drugs
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Know what a drug is.
- Have considered how drugs affect the body.
- Have considered ways to keep safe and to get help.
- Have considered ways of resisting peer pressure.
Year 5 and 6 Alcohol
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Know what a drug is.
- Have considered how alcohol affects the body.
- Have learnt about alcohol units.
- Have learnt that drinks have various strengths of alcohol.
- Have thought about who influences their decisions.
Year 5 and 6 Smoking
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Have learnt about the harmful effect of smoking.
- Have learnt what is inside a cigarette.
- Have considered the health and cost implications of smoking.
Year 5 Choices
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Have thought about who influences their decisions.
- Have thought about the decisions they make and how it affects them and others.
- Have considered ways of resisting peer pressure.
- Have considered ways to say no.
- Have heard they are unique and need to look after themselves.
Year 6 Solvents
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Have looked at the dangers of taking solvents.
- Have considered the effects others have on them and the decisions they make.
- Know where to go to for help regarding solvent misuse.
Year 6 Cannabis
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Have considered how cannabis affects the body.
- Have learnt what dangers there are in taking cannabis.
- Have thought about the possible consequences of cannabis use.
- Have thought about who influences their decisions.
Year 6 County Lines Awareness
By the end of the session the pupils will:
- Understand what the definition of county lines is and the signs to look out for if you think you are being exploited.
- Be aware of some of the terms used when describing county lines activity.
- Understand the people who are involved in county lines and where you can go if you need help.
- Learn how to resist peer pressure with ways to say no.
